Disc bulge

What is Disc Bulge?

A disc bulge occurs when the soft cushion-like discs between the vertebrae in the spine begin to protrude beyond their normal boundary. Unlike a herniated disc, a bulging disc does not rupture but still puts pressure on the surrounding nerves, leading to pain, stiffness, and mobility issues. This condition most commonly affects the lumbar (lower back) and cervical (neck) regions, making it difficult to perform daily activities.

Causes of Disc Bulge

  • Aging & Degeneration: Natural wear and tear of spinal discs.
  • Poor Posture & Prolonged Sitting: Sedentary lifestyle strains the spine.
  • Heavy Lifting & Sudden Movements: Improper lifting techniques.
  • Obesity: Excess body weight increases spinal pressure.
  • Injury or Trauma: Falls, accidents, or sports injuries.
  • Repetitive Strain: Continuous stress on the spine from activities like bending, twisting, or prolonged standing.

Symptoms of Disc Bulge

  • ✅ Persistent back or neck pain that worsens with movement.
  • ✅ Numbness or tingling in the arms, legs, or affected area.
  • ✅ Weakness in muscles, making movement difficult.
  • ✅ Pain radiating to the shoulders, arms, or legs.
  • ✅ Difficulty bending, walking, or sitting for long durations.

Ayurvedic Approach to Disc Bulge

In Ayurveda, disc bulge is associated with an imbalance of Vata dosha, which governs movement and the nervous system. Excess Vata leads to dryness and degeneration of spinal discs, causing pain and discomfort. Kerala Ayurveda focuses on restoring the spine’s health through herbal medicines, Panchakarma therapies, and lifestyle modifications to relieve pain naturally.
